The Women’s Community Correctional Center (WCCC) in Honolulu recently held a special event, Star Light, Star Bright Kids’ Day, in collaboration with the Pūʻā Foundation and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. The event took place on December 7, 2024, and was designed to reunite incarcerated mothers with their children for a day of bonding.
The program included ten mothers, eighteen children, and ten caregivers. Participants from Maui and Hawaiʻi Island were flown to Oʻahu thanks to donations that also provided gifts for the children. Families engaged in activities such as a puppet show, arts and crafts, games, and other interactive experiences facilitated by approximately thirty volunteers from the Pūʻā Foundation along with twelve inmates.
Director Tommy Johnson of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation attended the event. He remarked on its significance: “Event like this for the mothers and the children, staff and volunteers, it reinforces one, the bonds between the mother and child and two, it lets them see that there are other people out there that care about them that want them to succeed.” Johnson expressed gratitude towards those who organized the gathering by stating: “We couldn’t have done this without them.”
Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu also participated by offering blessings to families present at the event. For over twenty years, his organization has collaborated with correctional facilities to support incarcerated mothers in maintaining connections with their children.
Entertainment included songs performed by Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts and hula dances by students from Sacred Hearts Academy. Warden Ione “Noni” Guillonta emphasized: “Events like this are critical to help mothers maintain their connection with their children.”
The festive atmosphere was enhanced by Santa Claus's visit during which families enjoyed shave ice, cupcakes, and photo sessions. Attendees left with presents, books, and gift cards.
This occasion marked WCCC’s sixth Kids’ Day event of 2024. The center organizes these events annually alongside community groups and faith-based organizations.
