The Department of Law Enforcement's Narcotics Enforcement Division (NED) in Honolulu is making significant enhancements to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). The initiative aims to prevent drug overdoses and deaths caused by lethal drug combinations.

The updated PDMP will now integrate a patient's history of prescriptions for controlled substances into their electronic health records. This integration allows prescribers to better identify dangerous prescription drug quantities or combinations, thereby reducing the risk of substance use disorders.

NED has partnered with Bamboo Health, its PDMP vendor, to implement these enhancements. "Advanced prescription monitoring improves the quality of care in our communities and combats the rise in drug overdoses. We are empowering our healthcare providers with the tools they need to make informed decisions and improve health outcomes for the people of Hawai‘i," stated NED Acting Administrator Michael Hartsock.

The funding for this $346,000 annual contract with Bamboo Health comes from a grant awarded to the Hawai‘i Department of Health by the CDC’s Overdose Data to Action in States initiative.

Healthcare providers and pharmacies are encouraged to enroll through Bamboo Health’s PMP Gateway to take advantage of this program.
