In a recent confirmation hearing, U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) questioned Chris Wright, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Energy, on several critical issues. Wright, who is currently the CEO of Liberty Energy, faced inquiries about his potential conflicts of interest and his commitment to overseeing the Department of Energy's (DOE) funding programs.

Senator Hirono highlighted the devastation caused by wildfires in Los Angeles and Maui, emphasizing the need for improvements to Maui's electrical grid to mitigate wildfire risks and ensure reliable power access. "As we see these kinds of natural disasters, I think states and municipalities will need help from the DOE," said Senator Hirono.

Hawaiian Electric received $95 million through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) in 2023 for rebuilding efforts in Maui. Hirono sought assurance from Wright that he would continue funding grid improvements under the new administration. The IIJA mandates prevailing wages for all construction projects funded by the DOE, which could create numerous clean energy jobs. Hirono asked Wright to commit to upholding these labor standards.

Questions also arose regarding a dinner at Mar-a-Lago hosted by President-elect Trump in April 2024. "The Washington Post reported in April 2024 that Donald Trump told a group of about 24 oil executives at Mar-a-Lago that they should raise $1 billion for his campaign," stated Senator Hirono. Wright denied any such offer was made during this event but acknowledged attending it.

Senator Hirono pressed Wright on his ability to remain objective if confirmed as Secretary of Energy, especially under potential pressure from President-elect Trump to favor certain businesses. "If you are confirmed, your obligation will be to the American people, not to the shareholders or board members for an oil or gas company," she asserted.

The full transcript of their exchange is available below:

Senator Hirono began with questions related to sexual misconduct:

"Since you became a legal adult, have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or committed any verbal or physical harassment or assault of a sexual nature?"

Wright responded: "I have not."

Further questioning focused on natural gas exports and their impact on utility costs for Americans:

"Would you allow all exports of natural gas...regardless of whether...exports would increase heating and power bills for the American people?"

Wright replied: "Absolutely, senator, I share your concern there."
