Inmate Kawai J. Pomroy, who was one of three individuals that left the Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center (HCCC) Hale Nani site without permission in December 2024, has been returned to custody. Park rangers at the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park apprehended Pomroy, aged 41, within the national park on Tuesday afternoon, January 14, 2025.

Pomroy faces charges including second-degree escape, first-degree theft (motor vehicle), and first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. Additionally, he was arrested for a furlough violation based on an HCCC warden’s arrest warrant.

Previously, inmate Joseph C. Fernandez, aged 36, was arrested by the Hawaiʻi County Police Department at the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in the Kaʻu District on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Meanwhile, inmate Clyde T. Loa remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. The three men were reported missing from Hale Nani on Friday, December 13, 2024. Around this time, a vehicle belonging to a Hale Nani employee was also reported missing but was later found at Ocean View Estates on December 18.

Loa is described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 165 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He is serving time for unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle and unauthorized possession of confidential information.

Authorities urge anyone with information regarding Loa's whereabouts to contact them by calling either 911 or the Sheriffs Division at 808-586-1352.
