U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has joined forces with over 40 lawmakers to address the issue of American firearms reaching Mexican drug cartels. The group has submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court concerning the case Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. et al., v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
This case involves Mexico suing U.S. gun manufacturers and a distributor for allegedly aiding illegal arms trafficking. It is seen as pivotal for victims and survivors of gun violence who seek to hold the gun industry accountable for its actions.
Senator Richard Blumenthal, along with Senators Chris Murphy, Cory Booker, Tim Kaine, Jack Reed, Adam B. Schiff, Chris Van Hollen, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Ron Wyden have also signed the brief alongside Representatives Madeleine Dean and Jamie Raskin and 33 other members of the House.
The initiative is backed by GIFFORDS Law Center. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on March 4, 2025.
