U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, alongside several colleagues, has introduced a resolution condemning the pardons of individuals convicted of assaulting Capitol Police officers during the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. This move comes after President Trump issued full pardons to over 1,500 people charged with crimes related to the incident on his first day of his second term.
The resolution states: “Resolved, That the Senate disapproves of any pardons for individuals who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol Police officers.” It was co-sponsored by Senators Patty Murray, Chuck Schumer, Chris Murphy, Andy Kim, and more than 40 others.
Senator Hirono expressed concern over these pardons, stating: “President Trump issuing sweeping pardons for these violent insurrectionists rewards political violence while insulting the rule of law.” She emphasized that those found guilty should be held accountable for their actions against law enforcement officers who protected lawmakers during the siege.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, approximately 1,572 defendants have been federally charged in connection with the January 6th attack. Of these, about 598 faced charges related to assaulting or obstructing law enforcement officers.
Among those granted pardons were individuals like Taylor James Johnatakis and Julian Khater, both convicted of assaults on police officers during the riot. The list also includes Robert Palmer and Tyler Bradley Dykes among others who faced similar charges.
In total, 46 senators signed onto this resolution as co-sponsors.
