As the wet season continues, residents and businesses in Hawaiʻi are being urged to review their insurance policies. The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Insurance Division has highlighted the importance of understanding insurance coverages and deductibles following recent heavy rains and strong winds.
Acting Insurance Commissioner Jerry Bump emphasized the need for individuals to be familiar with their policies. "Individuals should familiarize themselves with what their insurance policies cover and the out-of-pocket expenses they are responsible for annually. If they are unsure or wish to make changes before renewing, policyholders can contact their agent or insurance company," he stated.
Bump also noted the unpredictability of natural disasters, especially flooding, given recent weather forecasts. "With the recent local forecasts including possible flooding and strong winds, we are reminded that natural disasters can be unpredictable, and flooding can happen anytime and anywhere," he added.
The division has pointed out a common misconception about standard insurance policies. Many people may not realize that most homeowners, condo unit owners, and renters' insurance policies do not include flood damage coverage. To address this gap, flood insurance can be purchased separately through the National Flood Insurance Program or added as an endorsement to existing homeowners' insurance.
