Kapalua Kai Sailing, Inc. is actively working to address the situation involving a grounded sailboat on Maui by collaborating with relevant authorities and providing regular updates to the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). Two marine surveyors have evaluated the condition of the vessel, confirming that there has been no change in its status or any new damage.
The Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) conducted an initial assessment of potential coral reef damage. This assessment involved consultations with marine surveyors and a prospective salvage operator. A more comprehensive evaluation will be conducted after the sailboat is relocated.
The Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) and DAR have endorsed the owner's salvage plan, which targets a removal timeframe between February 12th and 17th. Despite this approval, the owner faces challenges in securing a salvage company due to limited availability and willingness among potential contractors.
In response to unauthorized access, "Hula Girl" is now surrounded by safety tape, with clear signage indicating restricted access. The owner has requested assistance from their insurance provider to hire a security guard for daylight monitoring to prevent further unauthorized boardings.
Meghan Statts, DOBOR Administrator, urged compliance with no trespassing signs for public safety. She reminded that boarding without permission constitutes a misdemeanor offense.
