The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has issued a public alert concerning enoki mushrooms from the MYY Trade Co. brand due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes. These mushrooms were distributed locally through Palama Supermarket stores and are packaged in 7.05-ounce clear and blue plastic packages, identified by UPC 8 809201 000039 and lot code 136.
This warning stems from a routine food sampling and analysis program executed by the DOH Laboratory Preparedness and Response Branch alongside the Food and Drug Branch (FDB), funded by a federal grant from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDB is working with local supermarkets and produce distributors to ensure that the contaminated products are removed from shelves.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection that can be fatal, particularly affecting pregnant individuals, newborns, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. Listeriosis is treatable with antibiotics but requires immediate medical attention if symptoms develop after consuming contaminated food.
To date, no illnesses have been reported in Hawaiʻi linked to this product. Consumers are advised to verify their purchase against the specific lot number and dispose of any affected items properly while ensuring thorough handwashing and sanitation of contact surfaces.
The FDB also advises cooking enoki mushrooms thoroughly before consumption to prevent contamination risks associated with raw mushrooms.
