U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono has criticized former President Donald Trump for his decision to dismiss the two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In a statement, Hirono described Trump's action as "illegal," referencing a 1935 Supreme Court decision that she claims protects the independence of the FTC.

"Yesterday, President Trump claimed to fire two Commissioners of the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC is an independent agency, and Trump’s action is illegal under a unanimous 1935 Supreme Court decision," Hirono stated.

The senator accused Trump of targeting the FTC because it plays a crucial role in protecting consumers and small businesses from unfair practices by large corporations. "Trump is going after the FTC because it exists to protect consumers and small businesses against unfair, deceptive, and anticompetitive acts by megacorporations," she said.

Hirono further argued that Trump's move was part of a broader effort to weaken government institutions. "This illegal act is yet another example of Trump’s attempt to cripple government and get rid of any officials or agencies that stand in his way by following the law."

The FTC functions as the federal government's main regulatory body for the tech industry, overseeing antitrust and consumer protection laws. Following Trump's decision, control of the FTC has shifted to its remaining commissioners, who are all Republicans.
