Chief Justice Recktenwald appoints Sonya Toma as Maui family court judge

Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald has appointed Sonya H. Toma to a judicial position in the District Family Court of the Second Circuit, covering Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi.

Toma is currently a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Maui County Department of the Prosecuting Attorney. Her previous experience includes roles with the Maui County Department of Corporation Counsel, the Family Law Division of the Department of the Attorney General on Maui, the Family Law Self-Help Center at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, the State Office of the Public Defender on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island, as well as private practice.

In 2007, Toma graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law and was admitted to the Hawaiʻi State Bar. She holds additional licenses to practice law in Indiana and Nevada.

She has an extensive background in family law and has contributed to her community by serving as a Kids First Parent Co-Facilitator for the Second Circuit Family Court’s Kids First Hawaiʻi program. Toma has also volunteered at the Maui Self-Help Center and through the Maui office of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaiʻi.
