U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono of Hawaii held a meeting with leaders from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA) to address concerns regarding the Trump Administration's impact on K-12 public education. The discussion focused on the ramifications of potential cuts to federal programs like Title I, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and school meal provisions. AFT President Randi Weingarten and NEA President Becky Pringle expressed their concerns about these programs' future and the possible elimination of funding for the U.S. Department of Education.

“In his attacks on public education, Donald Trump is robbing our children’s futures to pay for massive giveaways to his billionaire buddies,” stated Senator Hirono. She emphasized the essential role of the Department of Education in supporting low-income and disabled students. Hirono accused the Trump administration of causing harm and uncertainty by attempting to dismantle the department and vowed to collaborate with the AFT and NEA to safeguard educational resources.

Despite congressional approval being required to abolish the Department of Education, Trump reportedly made moves to undermine its functions by slashing its budget and workforce. Recent actions included laying off nearly 1,300 department employees, offering financial incentives for agency personnel to resign, reducing funding for teacher training, and terminating contracts managed by the Institute of Education Sciences.

Senator Hirono is also dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for youth. In February, she criticized the nomination of Linda McMahon as Education Secretary, citing concerns over her experience and loyalty to the administration's goals, which include dismantling the Department of Education. Hirono also opposed efforts to cut essential federal funding for educational programs. She continues to push legislative efforts, such as the reintroduction of the Keep Our Promise to America’s Children and Teachers Act, aimed at ensuring funding for crucial educational programs.
