University of Hawaii at Manoa Professor Kristine Qureshi has been selected to be a part of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Board of Directors, according to a university press release.

Qureshi was chosen for the board from a pool of 80 applicants.

Qureshi's goal while on the board will be to help support CUGH to bolster its global health community of academics, which includes over 179 member institutions from around the world. Each of these organizations is dedicated to solving the health challenges that the world faces.

The University of Hawaii became a member of this network in 2018, seeking to leverage the institution in order to contribute to the improvement of health care around the world and in Hawaii.

“It is a great honor to have been selected to serve on the CUGH Board to serve alongside my esteemed colleagues who share a passion for global health and the understanding of the value that academic institutions can and should play to improve the well-being of people across the globe through education, research, service and advocacy," Qureshi said.

Aimee Grace, who serves as the director of the UH System's Office of Strategic Health Initiatives, nominated Qureshi for the position, having personally seen her at work and her dedication to public health.

“Dr. Qureshi’s work around the world is highly effective given her depth and breadth of expertise in exactly the areas that the CUGH Board needs. She will bring the important perspective of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific, an oft-overlooked region of the world," Grace said.

Mary G. Boland, dean and professor of the SONDH of which Qureshi is a part of, said the school is so proud to have Qureshi representing nursing and Hawaiʻi in this international and global platform.

"Her unique skill set and robust professional nursing experience will be a valuable addition to CUGH and highlights the UH commitment to pursue positive health outcomes for people around the world," Boland said.

Following her official election, Qureshi will serve a three-year term that is slated to begin in April 2021.
