Two schools in Hawaii have been distinguished as the inaugural Hawaii Schools of Democracy, each being recognized in separate ceremonies.
The Hawaii Schools of Democracy program is an initiative backed by the Commission to Promote and Advance Civic Education (PACE) and the state's Department of Education. The program aims to honor high schools in Hawaii that not only excel acadically but also prepare students for active civic participation and professional life. According to a news release from the Hawaii Supreme Court dated December 6, which established PACE, qualifying high schools must foster an organizational structure that prioritizes student agency in shaping their learning experiences. Additionally, they must emphasize the ideals of the Aloha Spirit Law and the tenets of Na Hopena A’o. Furthermore, these schools should provide diverse learning experiences to encourage community engagement, civic understanding, and critical thinking.
"What we see at Mililani High School is a lot of interdisciplinary connection and in particular, a real emphasis on helping our students become active members of the community. For me that has always been the most important thing — is to make sure that youth voices are heard and centered in our processes," said Representative Amy Perruso, who serves on the PACE Commission.
Mililani High School was honored in a ceremony held on January 5. The school's comprehensive social studies framework for curriculum was highlighted as one reason for its selection. It offers a range of activities promoting community activity and civic responsibility, including an Advanced Placement African American Studies program.
According to a press release dated January 5, Maui High School will be recognized in a ceremony scheduled for January 8.
"We are so proud of the Mililani High School teachers and students. The commitment that you embrace with passion and purpose to ensure that our students here at Mililani embrace the values of being globally competitive and locally committed… really speaks volumes to the work that the Department is so committed to," said Keith Hayashi, Hawaii Superintendent of Education.
