The University of Hawaii (UH) at Hilo can celebrate a recent ranking it received, naming it one of the most diverse higher-education institutions in the U.S.
“Our diversity is one of UH Hilo's greatest strengths,” UH Chancellor Bonnie Irwin said, according to the University of Hawaii's website. “It contributes to a great environment both in and out of the classroom for our students to learn from one another. I am proud that we can provide an educational home here in Hilo, itself a diverse city, for such a wide array of students.”
According to U.S. News and World Report, the University of Hawaii at Hilo was ranked as one of the most racially and ethnically diverse campuses among national universities in the magazine's 2022 report of college rankings. UH Hilo's diversity index was 76%. Stanford University, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and the University of San Francisco also had a score of 76%. These were followed very closely by Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey.
The report uses each institution's fall 2020 total undergraduate student body. It factors in the total proportion of minority students, leaving out international students, and the overall mix of groups.
The ethnic categories are: non-Hispanic African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, Asian, non-Hispanic white and multiracial (two or more races). "Non-Hispanic whites" was the category used for students who did not identify themselves as members of any of the listed demographic groups.
