Students at all 10 University of Hawai’i campuses are invited to apply for a portion of $39.4 million in federal COVID-19 assistance available for the current academic year.
“I applaud the University of Hawaiʻi’s work to connect students at all 10 campuses with available federal COVID-19 financial assistance,” U.S. Rep. Kaiali’i Kahele posted Friday, sharing a link on his Facebook page to a release from the university.
Almost $34 million has already been distributed to UH students from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund since May 2020, according to a press release from the university. With $39.4 million still remaining, the funds must all be disbursed to students under the terms of three relief bills in place by the federal government.
During the summer, $8.4 million had been distributed to students through a university debt forgiveness program. This credited more than 10,700 students with outstanding debts the amount needed to clear their accounts, the release states. Of those who received funding, 29% identified as Hawaiian or part Hawaiian.
Interested students can view opportunities for assistance online, the release states. The UH Student Basic Needs website offers information on additional support, including food resources and SNAP benefits.
