Ohio State University defensive tackle Haskell Garrett has been named to the 2021 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year.

Garrett was one of the key players who supported the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 10-2 record and a selection to play in the 2022 Rose Bowl Game.

“We congratulate Haskell on an outstanding season,” Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Chairman Jesse Sapolu told KHON2. “His accomplishments are a source of great pride for the Polynesian community.”

CBS Sports named Garrett first team All-Big Ten and a first team All-American.

The 2022 Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Celebration Dinner will be held on Friday, Jan. 21. The award will be presented during the dinner event.

This award recognizes a Polynesian college football player who has demonstrated the most outstanding ability and integrity. There are six other finalists for the awards, which included quarterback Jayden de Laura (Washington State University), offensive lineman Daniel Faalele (University of Minnesota), linebacker Noah Sewell (University of Oregon), defensive end Mika Tafua (University of Utah), quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa (University of Maryland), and running back Jaylen Warren (Oklahoma State University).

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota, who was playing for the University of Oregon at the time, was the first recipient of the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award in 2014. Garrett is a former Hawaii resident of Samoan ancestry.
