University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s basketball team breaks Alaska Anchorage's eight-game winning streak

The University of Hawaii at Hilo women's basketball team defeated nationally ranked No. 5 Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 19, scoring 76-73 in overtime.

The Vulcans team effort put an end to Alaska's eight-game winning streak.

“The Vulcans were quick on their feet, taking five steals by five different players: Mandi Kawaha, Heaven Samayoa-Mathis, Mindy Kawaha, Kayla Revelo and Sierra Cavaletto all had a steal a piece,” according to UH Hilo Athletics.

Mandi Kawaha led UH Hilo with 21 points and six assists, followed by Samayoa-Mathis with a career-high of 15 points, followed by Jenna Waki and Nikki Miller with 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Kawaha sisters were two of the best at the free-throw line: Mandi gave a solid 7-for-8 and Mindy Kawaha was 1-for-2. Mandi Kawaha was followed by Waki, who was 5-for-6, and Samayoa-Mathis, who was 2-for-3.

Miller had nine rebounds, followed closely by Revelo, who collected seven. UH Hilo shot 50% in the field, according to UH Hilo Athletics.

The Vulcans' next game will be Monday, Jan. 10, at noon against Biola University.
