The University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans lost their first baseball game of a five-game series on Feb. 24.

Despite a strong kickoff, the UH Hilo baseball team was defeated by Hawaii Pacific University Sharks with a final score of 6-11.

“UHH started strong with a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but HPU was able to break through in the third, successfully stringing together four runs,” the Official Athletics Site of Hawaii at Hilo said. “(Jamieson) Hirayama closed the game and limited eighth-inning damage, getting the final two outs of the inning to send his team back on offense.”

After the game at Hans L'Orange Park, the Vulcans dropped to 9-3 and 0-1 in the PacWest while the host was ranked 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest Conference.

While both teams scored two more runs before the game ended, the Sharks managed to come out on top for this game.

Pitchers James Yamasaki, Aaron Davies, Takashi Umino, Ty Honda, and Hirayama took the hill during the game, according to the Official Athletics Site of Hawaii at Hilo.

Since that game, the Vulcans played three more against the Sharks. Those resulted in one loss (0-8) and two wins, one particularly impressive (7-4 and 17-6). The Vulcans' next game will be Friday, March 4, at 3:30 p.m. against Fresno Pacific University at Wong Stadium.
