Gov. David Ige (D-HI) has recently announced the appointment of five members to the State of Hawaii Board of Education, according to the Office of the Governor.

Makana McClellan, Lauren Moriarty and Ken Kuraya are among the new appointments, while Damien "Kaimana" Barcarse and Bruce Voss were selected for reappointment.

“The highly skilled people I’ve selected to be on the Board of Education bring a range of experiences that will contribute to a public education system that delivers results for the people of Hawaii," Ige said, according to the Office of the Governor. "They will continue to ensure that our public schools are places where students can unleash their curiosity and creativity and prepare to help us meet the state’s goals in renewable energy, locally grown food production, environmental stewardship and more."

Barcarse has been reappointed to the Hawaii County seat for a three-year term beginning July 1 and ending June 30, 2025.

Voss has also been reappointed to a three-year term as an at-large member, effective from July 1 to June 30, 2025.

McClellan was appointed to the Honolulu City and County Council for a three-year term that will start July 1 and end June 30, 2025.

Moriarty has been appointed to serve the remainder of Lyla Berg's three-year term as a City and County of Honolulu council member.

Berg's term began July 1, 2021, and ends on June 30, 2024. However, she has chosen not to remain in the seat until the conclusion of the current legislative session and therefore will only serve until May 5, at which point Moriarty will take over.

Kuraya will serve the remainder of Catherine Payne's three-year at-large term, which started on July 1, 2021, and concludes on June 30, 2024.

Payne has also declined to stay in her seat until the conclusion of the current legislative session and will remain until June 30, 2022, when Kuraya will take over on July 1.

The appointments are currently waiting for Hawaii Senate approval.
