U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) recently announced that his efforts have secured more than $22.3 million in Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant funding for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL).
The grant allocated by the Senate Appropriations Committee is the largest amount of funding for Native Hawaiian housing ever appropriated by Congress, a recent press release from the senator's office said.
“We secured the highest level of funding for Native Hawaiian housing ever,” Schatz said in the release. “This major increase in funding is a big win and means DHHL will have more resources to put people into homes.”
Schatz serves as both the chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Housing.
The grant, which was included in this year’s appropriations bill and signed into law in March, is $20.3 million more than the amount allocated last year.
