U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) recently announced a $10 million U.S. Department of Transportation contribution to the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport for upgrades to its runways and improvement of its terminal lighting and draining systems.

The funding is a portion of at least $2.8 billion Hawaii that is to receive from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which President Joe Biden signed into law last November. Hawaii’s airports are set to get approximately $246 million in federal funding as a result of the IIJA.

“This new federal funding will support necessary upgrades at HNL, which will improve the airport’s runways, main terminal, and passenger experience,” Schatz said in a recent statement from his office.

In addition to the various terminal upgrades and improvements, the funding will be utilized to rebuild approximately 142,000 square feet of pavement on terminal roadways, as well as improving lighting and draining systems on the second and third floors of the Diamond Head and Ewa concourses.

Schatz is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
