Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources Engineering Division, Department of Agriculture and state Sen. Lorraine Inouye will host a community meeting on Sept. 29 about the Upolu Well Improvements Project in North Kohala on Hawaii Island.

According to a release from the office of Gov. David Ige, DLNR engineers and consultants are currently in the planning and design phase of the project, which aims to make improvements “to develop the existing Upolu monitoring well to a production well that can provide water for agriculture to the adjacent area of North Kohala.”

This informational meeting will offer an overview and solicit community input. Funding for the project is provided by the Hawaii State Legislature “with the support of Sen. Inouye for capital improvements,” according to the release.

The meeting is scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Kohala Village Hub Barn in Hawi, Hawaii.

Project plans, according to the release, include “installing a pump in the well, building a storage tank to store the well water and fitting pipes to send the pumped well water into the storage tank and out for distribution.”

It’s suggested that individuals requiring special assistance, auxiliary aids or services, contact Brandon Kim at brandon.j.kim@hawaii.gov at least four days before the meeting.
