Three University of Hawaii at Hilo students are studying aboard after receiving scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year, according to a release from the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
Kylan Constantino, a sophomore majoring in Japanese studies, is attending Tokyo Gakugei University in Japan after receiving the John and Anya McVickar Study Abroad Scholarship for $1,300 as well as the Audrey S. Furukawa Study Abroad Scholarship for $500. Constantino graduated from Waimea High School on Kauai in 2021.
Eric Pohlman, a sophomore majoring in linguistics, received the Gertrude E. McVickar Study Abroad Scholarship for $1,500 and the Audrey S. Furukawa Study Abroad Scholarship for $1,500.
Pohlman is a graduate of Honokaa High School and will study at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea this fall and at Seinan Gakuin University in Japan during the spring 2023 semester.
Joshua Kosloski, a senior majoring in marine science, was awarded a scholarship through the Semester at Sea Program (SAS). On Sept. 9 he began his voyage with SAS to visit 11 countries, 11 cities, and three continents during the fall while taking classes onboard the World Odyssey.
In a Facebook post from UH Hilo, Allegra, a previous recipient of the Semester at Sea program said: “Yes, it is possible to travel and see the world while getting your degree at the same time!” She added, “Living on a ship for 4 months is a unique experience, and the community becomes very close-knit. Other than focusing on classes, I had to manage getting sea-sick, making friends, and participating in clubs. There was so much going on all the time, but everyone else was in the same boat (literally!). I got to know my professors at a personal level, and I was able to appreciate making personal connections without the presence of technology. Ship-life was an adjustment at first, but as the voyage went on my favorite feeling was coming home to the ship after a long day of exploring in-country.”
