HONOLULU – Attorney General Anne Lopez has confirmed that the Phase One report on the independent investigation into the Maui wildfires will be released on April 17, 2024. The report will provide a comprehensive analysis of how the fire incident unfolded during the first 24 to 72 hours and its aftermath, including a detailed timeline of events.

Speaking on behalf of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), Steve Kerber, PhD, PE, vice president and executive director, expressed gratitude towards community members and emergency workers for sharing their experiences during the wildfire. Kerber emphasized the importance of reviewing extensive data to ensure a thorough analysis and provide recommendations to enhance safety in Hawaiʻi.

Attorney General Lopez highlighted the significance of conducting a meticulous investigation based on science to uncover the truth behind the tragic wildfire incident. She stated, "We understand the people of Hawaiʻi need to know what happened... I am confident that the Phase One report will provide some answers to the questions surrounding the tragic wildfire incident."

The FSRI has been collaborating with impacted communities since August 2023 with the aim of developing new policies and procedures to prevent future disasters and create a safer environment for Hawaiʻi residents for generations to come.

The Attorney General's Office served multiple subpoenas to gather relevant documents and information for the investigation, reflecting the comprehensive scope of the inquiry. The Phase One report will be followed by Phase Two, which will delve deeper into the analysis of the wildfire incident.
