The monthly test of the all-hazard Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System is scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 11:45 a.m. The siren test will be coordinated with a test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System.

Legacy Land Conservation Program seeks applications for $6.7 million in grants

DHHL district offices to close for staff training

Waiawa Correctional Facility holds Resource Day for inmate reentry preparation
Approximately 35 vendors, including job readiness programs, education, employment/vocational training programs, housing assistance, peer support, substance abuse treatment, health care, and children and family programs, participated in Resource Day to provide information and referral services to approximately 180 inmates at Waiawa Correctional Facility. The inmates are within two years of reentering the community.

Hawaiʻi Department of Health reports fifth mpox case diagnosed in state for 2024
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) has reported an additional case of mpox in a nonresident diagnosed in Honolulu County. This marks the fifth case diagnosed in Hawai‘i in 2024, bringing the total number of cases reported to the DOH since June 3, 2022, to 51. Individuals at higher risk of mpox infection are advised to consider vaccination with two doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine.

Hauff said some of the new science discussed at the symposium includes new tools, such as a beetle repellent known as verbenone. “It’s a goo you put on trees that keeps beetles away. So, the hope is that where we detect the disease in new areas, it can prevent beetles from boring into trees and further spreading the disease. It’s experimental now, but we hope it will be a tool we can use in the future, particularly in places like Kauaʻi, which still has a chance to contain the disease.”

Honolulu police officer sentenced for insurance fraud
Judge Ronald G. Johnson of the O‘ahu Circuit Court sentenced Honolulu Police Officer Cheyne Kaninau today for committing insurance fraud, a Class-C felony. Kaninau was involved in an automobile accident and subsequently obtained a GEICO insurance policy. He then attempted to file a claim with GEICO to have them pay for damages to his uninsured vehicle in the amount of $6,700.
