U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono has voted to pass the bipartisan spending package for fiscal year 2024, which includes over $16.5 million in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) for organizations in Hawaii. The bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 74-24, covers various sectors such as Defense, Financial Services and General Government, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services.
Senator Hirono expressed her satisfaction with the funding package, stating, “This spending package includes critical investments for communities in Hawaii and across our country.” She highlighted the importance of projects aimed at expanding access to education and healthcare resources in Hawaii, emphasizing her commitment to securing federal funding for programs supporting families and communities in the state.
Among the projects secured by Senator Hirono in partnership with the Hawaii Congressional delegation are initiatives focused on workforce training, healthcare, education, and cultural enrichment. For instance, funding has been allocated to establish the first Hawaii-based Physician Assistant Program, expand healthcare facilities, improve educational resources, and enhance wellness programs for various demographics across the state.
The appropriations bill also includes allocations for building new facilities, enhancing existing infrastructure, and implementing innovative programs to address critical shortages in the workforce and promote health equity among communities in Hawaii. The funding aims to support organizations such as the University of Hawaii System, Hana Health, Special Education Center of Hawaii, and various other entities working towards community development and well-being in the state.
