HONOLULU – Hawaiʻi Attorney General Anne Lopez has unveiled Phase One of the investigation into the state and county governments' response during the Maui wildfires. The report and timeline released will pave the way for further analysis and recommendations to enhance safety in Hawaiʻi.
Attorney General Lopez emphasized the importance of a thorough review, stating, "Responsible governance requires we look at what happened, and using an objective, science-based approach, identify how state and county governments responded." She added, "Today we are sharing the Lahaina Fire Report and Timeline so that the people of Hawaii can know how the fire unfolded."
Leading the investigation is the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), with Steve Kerber, Ph.D., PE, highlighting the focus of the report on events surrounding the Lahaina fire. Kerber stressed the urgency of addressing the threat posed by wildfires, particularly in the context of climate change and urban encroachment into wildland areas.
The Phase One report and Timeline concentrate on pre-fire conditions, fire progression, and emergency response. Kerber cautioned against premature conclusions, noting that more detailed analysis will follow in subsequent phases of the investigation.
Expressing gratitude to the community of Lahaina, Kerber acknowledged their contributions to the data collection process. He also commended the efforts of first responders and civilians during the tragic event.
Attorney General Lopez reiterated the investigative approach, stating, "Let me be clear: we are not here to place blame or draw conclusions." She emphasized the goal of identifying facts and developing policies to enhance safety in Hawaiʻi for future generations.
Lopez clarified that the investigation does not focus on determining the cause of the fire, as this aspect is being handled separately by other agencies.
The Phase Two report, slated for release at the end of summer, will delve deeper into the analysis, with Phase Three aimed at providing recommendations for the future.
The Department of the Attorney General remains committed to conducting a thorough and objective assessment of the Maui wildfires to enhance disaster response and prevention efforts.
