HONOLULU — The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) has announced that the monthly test of the Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System is set to take place on May 1, 2024, at 11:45 a.m. The test will also include the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System. The agency clarified that there will be no additional activities or drills conducted alongside this test.
In a statement, HI-EMA emphasized the importance of heeding emergency instructions in case the siren is heard outside of the scheduled test time. The public is advised to follow guidance provided by official government channels in such situations.
Residents and visitors in specific areas near Campbell Industrial Park on Oʻahu may hear a distinctive "whooping" tone after the siren test. This tone is part of a test for the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) siren warning group, designed to alert individuals in the event of a HAZMAT incident requiring immediate notification.
For further details on the HAZMAT warning group siren test, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management at 808-723-8960.
In preparation for emergencies, HI-EMA recommends accessing emergency management and disaster preparedness information available in telephone directories and online resources. Information on readiness and updates can be found on the HI-EMA website.
As the test date approaches, HI-EMA urges the public to contact emergency management and county civil defense agencies to report any concerns regarding siren operations.
