An opossum measuring approximately two feet long from head to tail was captured in Honolulu. The animal, which appears to be an adult or older juvenile, is being tested for rabies as a precaution due to its unknown origin.
Opossums are native to North America and have been known to stow away in shipping containers. They are omnivorous, consuming a diet that includes insects, bird eggs, rodents, fruits, and vegetables. While opossums are less likely than other mammals to carry rabies, they can still be carriers of parasites and other diseases.
Residents who spot illegal animals are urged to contact the statewide toll-free PEST HOTLINE at 808-643-PEST (7378).
