The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) Food Safety Branch has granted a yellow placard to Mark Kitchen & Catering, permitting its reopening on September 26. The establishment had been closed on September 25 due to critical violations.
Located at 399 N. King Street in Kalihi, the food service received a red placard for issues including sewage backup and inaccessible hand washing sinks. A follow-up inspection confirmed that the sewage problem was resolved and some critical violations were addressed.
A date for a follow-up inspection to issue a green placard has not yet been determined.
The establishment has been advised to continue monitoring for any sewage overflow. If such an issue arises, it should voluntarily close, seek immediate plumbing assistance, and sanitize the floors after repairs are completed.
The DOH Food Safety Branch aims to protect and promote the health of Hawai‘i residents and visitors through education and regulation of food establishments statewide. Routine health inspections are conducted at facilities where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed, or sold.
Additionally, the branch investigates sources of foodborne illnesses and potential adulteration while working to prevent future incidents. DOH food safety specialists collaborate with business owners and food service workers to ensure safe food preparation practices and sanitary conditions.
