U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, alongside a group of bipartisan colleagues, has introduced a resolution to commemorate October as Filipino-American History Month. The initiative highlights the significant cultural and historical contributions of Filipino American communities throughout the United States.
Senator Hirono stated, "From the first Filipino contract laborers who arrived in Hawai‘i seeking a better life, to the Filipino American leaders in business, health care, and our Armed Forces, this community has contributed to our country’s diversity and helped to shape our identity as a nation." She expressed pride in introducing this resolution to honor their contributions and celebrate their rich history and culture.
The legislation calls on Congress to recognize the month as an opportunity to reflect on the advancements made by Filipino Americans and urges further research into their history. It also encourages people across the U.S. to observe this month with suitable programs and activities.
In addition to Hirono's efforts, other notable sponsors include U.S. Representatives Ed Case (D-HI), Michelle Steel (R-CA), Robert Cortez Scott (D-VA), James Moylan (R-GU), and Jill Tokuda (D-HI). Over 35 representatives from the House have also supported this resolution.
