The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) Food Safety Branch has given the green light for Kat’s Kau Kau Moʻopuna Style to resume operations. The establishment, located at Mile Marker 106 on Māmalahoa Highway in Kailua-Kona, was issued a green "pass" placard following a follow-up inspection conducted on October 25, 2024.

Kat’s Kau Kau Moʻopuna Style is managed by Makaio Holdings LLC. The DOH had previously mandated the repair of the facility's handwashing sink as a corrective action. During the recent inspection, it was confirmed that this issue had been addressed and the sink is now fully operational. Dedicated handwashing sinks are essential in commercial kitchens to ensure employees can clean and sanitize their hands, thus preventing contamination and the spread of foodborne diseases.

The DOH Food Safety Branch is responsible for safeguarding the health of Hawai‘i residents and visitors through education and regulation within the food industry statewide. This includes routine inspections of establishments where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed, or sold.

Additionally, the branch investigates sources of foodborne illnesses and potential adulteration while working to mitigate these incidents to prevent future occurrences. The department emphasizes collaboration with business owners, food service workers, and others in the food industry to promote safe food preparation practices and maintain sanitary conditions.
