U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono has introduced a series of amendments aimed at counteracting the Senate Republicans' budget resolution, which, according to her, prioritizes tax cuts for billionaires at the expense of essential federal services. The amendments presented by the Hawaii Democrat focus on a variety of issues, including social welfare programs, national security, healthcare access, and ethics in governance.
Senator Hirono criticized the Republicans' proposal, stating, "Senate Republicans’ budget resolution makes clear where their loyalties lie—not with the American people, but with Donald Trump and his billionaire buddies." She added that the proposed budget resolution would adversely affect healthcare access, student nutrition, and support for veterans.
The amendments aim to protect key social programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Efforts include establishing points of order against legislation that would reduce Social Security services or allow unwarranted access to healthcare information.
Other amendments seek to bolster national security by protecting military personnel and classified information, as well as addressing what she describes as rampant corruption under the Trump administration. "Donald Trump and his ilk are paying for trillions in tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations on the backs of working families, veterans, seniors, and students. That is entirely unacceptable," Hirono stated in justification for her proposed amendments.
Senator Hirono also addresses issues affecting education and labor, proposing measures that ensure federal programs related to school meals, student aid, and worker safety remain funded and effective. These include maintaining funding for low-income schools and student nutrition programs.
Hirono’s proposals highlight a clear opposition to the budgetary policies she believes harm vulnerable segments of the population. However, it remains to be seen how these amendments will fare in the legislative process.
