Hawai‘i's creative industry continues to gain recognition as Erin Lau, a Native Hawaiian filmmaker, directs an episode of the drama series "Rescue: HI-Surf." The show, set on North Shore O‘ahu, airs on November 4, 2024, on FOX. This marks Lau's debut in network television directing. She is known for her work that explores themes such as redemption and identity.
Lau has built a reputation for empathetic storytelling through various platforms including Sundance Institute and Tribeca Studios. Her short film "Inheritance" premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and won the Best Hawai‘i Short Award at the Hawai‘i International Film Festival.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support from our local film community and the collective of organizations and advocates that have helped me grow as a filmmaker and are empowering even more voices,” Lau expressed. “Opportunities like this are essential for our emerging artists, and I’m thrilled to be part of ʻRescue: HI-Surf’ as it celebrates Hawai‘i’s creatives and stories.”
The production has involved over 2,100 local cast and crew members who have collectively earned more than $31 million in wages. Additionally, it has contributed over $33 million to the local economy through various expenditures. Local interns have also been provided with training opportunities.
Georja Skinner from the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) remarked on Lau's achievement: “’Rescue: HI-Surf’ has made a significant step in providing Erin this opportunity to direct television. Already an accomplished, award-winning filmmaker, she is committed to her community to see others realize their dreams."
