The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have announced an extension of the rental assistance program for Maui wildfire survivors. The program, initially set to end on February 10, 2025, will now continue beyond this date. Starting March 1, 2025, FEMA will begin collecting rent from participants in the Direct Housing Assistance program based on their ability to pay. Affected families are being notified of these changes.

The state of Hawaiʻi remains committed to supporting disaster survivors throughout their recovery process. Efforts are ongoing with key partners to ensure that all affected families are informed about upcoming changes to their housing assistance.

Families are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for these changes. The Hawaiʻi Office of Recovery and Resiliency is managing the Hawaiʻi Interim Housing Program (HIHP), working with survivors who were not eligible for FEMA Direct Housing to find suitable housing solutions. More information can be found at https://dbedt.hawaii.gov/hhfdc/hawaiistaterecovers/ or by calling 808-727-1550.

For further details, individuals can contact FEMA directly or visit the Maui County Office of Recovery. They may also reach out to the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) or call the FEMA temporary housing hotline at 808-784-1600.
