The Hawaiʻi Department of Taxation (DOTAX) has announced the commencement of the tax season, providing guidance to help taxpayers avoid delays and frustration during the filing process. The deadline for filing individual income tax returns is set for Monday, April 21, 2025.

Taxpayers are advised to begin organizing their tax records, including Form W-2 or HW-2, Wage and Tax Statement, Form 1099-G for certain government payments like unemployment compensation, and Form 1099-K for payments related to goods or services. DOTAX emphasizes that most income is taxable even if a 1099 form was not received. This includes earnings from the gig economy and digital assets.

The federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will open its tax season on January 27, 2025, with a filing deadline of April 15, 2025. Filing early can prevent cybercriminals from stealing refunds. Victims of identity theft or those seeking extra protection can enroll in DOTAX’s ID Theft Protection Program via Hawaiʻi Tax Online.

Electronic filing is recommended over paper filing due to improved accuracy and faster processing times. Free e-filing options are available through Hawaiʻi Tax Online using Form N-11 for residents.

Direct deposit is encouraged as it offers a quicker and safer refund method compared to receiving checks. To avoid processing delays, taxpayers should ensure all information on their returns is accurate and complete.

Refund status can be checked on DOTAX’s website using Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number along with the exact refund amount claimed.

For additional assistance, DOTAX provides a "Frequently Asked Questions" page online. Taxpayer Services agents are also available by phone during business hours.
