Today, Senator Mazie K. Hirono expressed her disapproval of Pete Hegseth's nomination for Secretary of Defense. The senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee cited several concerns in her statement following her vote against Hegseth.
Senator Hirono emphasized the importance of evaluating nominees based on their qualifications and suitability for their roles. "In considering all of President Trump’s nominees, I am focused on their fitness and qualifications to do the jobs for which they are nominated," she stated.
Hirono highlighted what she described as Hegseth's disqualifying personal misconduct, including allegations of sexual assault and excessive alcohol consumption at work. She also mentioned his refusal to commit to abstaining from alcohol if confirmed.
Further criticism was directed at Hegseth's leadership record in veterans service organizations, where Hirono noted financial mismanagement. She questioned his ability to manage a large federal agency like the Department of Defense, with its significant personnel and budgetary responsibilities.
Hirono also pointed out Hegseth's past statements that disparaged various groups, arguing that such behavior is unacceptable for a potential Secretary of Defense. "Since he was nominated, Mr. Hegseth has tried to walk back disgraceful statements he has made over the years," she said.
The senator stressed the need for a qualified leader amid global instability and national security challenges. "At a time of global instability...the American people are counting on us to confirm a trustworthy and qualified Secretary of Defense," she added.
During last week's confirmation hearing, Hirono questioned Hegseth on issues related to his conduct and loyalty if confirmed. Additionally, she joined other senators in introducing a resolution honoring women in combat roles and released a statement concerning abuse allegations against Hegseth.
