The Department of the Attorney General in Honolulu is set to conduct its first online asset forfeiture auction starting February 18. This marks a significant shift for Hawaiʻi, as previous auctions were held live at the Blaisdell Center before the COVID pandemic.
Asset Forfeiture Program Manager Kern Nishioka stated, "Prior to the COVID pandemic, we previously held live auctions quarterly at the Blaisdell Center. While online auctions are not a new idea, the launch of our auction website is a first for our office."
The initial offerings include cars and trucks, along with other items such as a commercial fishing boat with trailer and Morgan silver dollar coins. A preview page lists vehicles that will be available in this live online event.
Starting at 3 p.m. on February 18, items will become available on the department's auction page. Listings will be updated as new items are ready for bidding, with varying closure dates.
Participation requires a free eHawaii.gov account and is limited to individuals aged 18 and over. Detailed information about registration and bidding can be found on both the department’s auction page and its Asset Forfeiture Program page.
Proceeds from these auctions support law enforcement activities like training and equipment purchases, as well as covering program expenses.
