Gov. Green Names Community Leaders to Several Boards and Commissions

Roy Takumi, the newly appointed chair of the Board of Education (BOE), will succeed Warren Haruki, who recently resigned for personal reasons. Takumi, a former state legislator, has a background in education and public administration. Haruki, during his tenure as chair, focused on collaboration and teamwork within the BOE and the Department of Education, leading to positive outcomes for Hawaiʻi students.

Elynne Chung, a retired educator with over 40 years of experience, has been appointed to the BOE. Chung, recognized for her achievements as a school principal, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the board.

Mary Therese Perez Hattori, a community organizer and advocate for Pacific Islanders, has been appointed to the BOE. With a background in education and a commitment to supporting underrepresented communities, Hattori will be a valuable addition to the board.

Wesley Lo, CEO of ʻOhana Pacific Health, has been appointed to the BOE. Lo's experience in healthcare and finance, along with his previous service on the Board of Education, will bring a unique perspective to the board.

William “Bill” Arakaki, a retired educator with 40 years of service in the DOE, has been appointed to the BOE. Arakaki's extensive experience in education administration will be beneficial in guiding the board's decisions.

Ken Kuraya, currently serving as an at-large member of the BOE, has been recognized for his dedication to education during his 40 years of service in various roles within the DOE.

In addition to the BOE appointments, Governor Green has appointed Michael Miyahira to the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents, Hawaiʻi County member. Miyahira, a business consultant with banking experience, will bring strategic planning and governance expertise to the board.

Governor Green has also made appointments to the Early Learning Board, Land Use Commission, Mauna Kea Authority, Public Utilities Commission, and various other development boards and authorities, showcasing a commitment to diverse and experienced leadership in key areas of governance.

Finally, Governor Green expressed gratitude to Cheryl Kakazu Park for her 13 years of service as Director of the Office of Information Practices, appointing Carlotta Amerino as acting director following Park's retirement.
