U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, alongside Senator Adam Schiff and 17 other colleagues, has introduced a resolution condemning President Donald Trump's executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education. This move by Trump is described as an illegal attempt to reduce federal education funding and freeze grants for public schools. The resolution emphasizes the federal government's historical role in public education and highlights the significance of public schools in providing opportunities for children nationwide.

Senator Hirono expressed strong opposition to Trump's actions, stating: “Through his illegal attempt to abolish the Department of Education, Donald Trump will continue his focus on crippling our government and sowing chaos in schools and communities across the country, eliminating important programs that our children rely on—all under the guise of supporting our students and increasing government efficiency.”

The resolution is cosponsored by Senators including Richard Blumenthal, Lisa Blunt Rochester, Dick Durbin, Martin Heinrich, Amy Klobuchar, Edward Markey, Jeff Merkley, Alex Padilla, Gary Peters, Jacky Rosen, Bernie Sanders, Jeanne Shaheen, Elissa Slotkin, Chris Van Hollen, Raphael Warnock, Peter Welch, and Ron Wyden. A companion resolution was introduced in the House by Representative Suzanne Bonamici with over 100 cosponsors.

Several organizations endorse this resolution such as A Way Home America and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), among others.

Senator Hirono continues her advocacy for educational improvements. She recently urged Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to reinstate fired Federal Student Aid employees responsible for handling student aid complaints. Last month she spoke against McMahon's nomination due to concerns about her qualifications and loyalty to Trump's Project 2025 plan which includes abolishing the Department of Education.

Senator Hirono has also reintroduced legislation known as the Keep Our Promise to America’s Children and Teachers (PACT) Act aimed at ensuring full funding for Title I and IDEA programs.
