The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) Food Safety Branch has issued a red "closed" placard to Hiro’s Place in Hilo following several repeated food safety violations. The establishment, found at 50 East Puainako St., was shut down after inspections on March 24 and 27, 2025, identified numerous issues, which were not addressed in subsequent visits.
Violations observed included a lack of soap and paper towels at hand sinks, staff handling ready-to-eat food with bare hands, improper food storage in refrigerators, inadequate sanitizer concentrations, incorrect use and storage of wipe cloths, poor temperature control for hot and cold foods, and the presence of eating and drinking in food preparation areas.
On March 28, it was confirmed that the issues persisted, leading to the immediate closure of the restaurant due to the risk to public health. The establishment must rectify these problems before reopening. Required corrective actions include staff attendance at a DOH food safety class, the development and implementation of policies for handwashing and food contact surface maintenance, and thorough cleaning and sanitization of the premises. A follow-up inspection by the DOH is mandatory before the restaurant can resume operations.
The DOH Food Safety Branch aims to protect Hawai‘i residents and visitors by educating food industry workers and regulating food establishments. The branch is tasked with routine health checks, investigating foodborne illness sources, and addressing potential food adulteration to avoid similar occurrences. They collaborate with business owners and food service workers to ensure adherence to food safety standards.
