Hawaiʻi Department of Health issues recall alert for Totally Cool ice cream products
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health (DOH) Food and Drug Branch (FDB) has issued a recall alert for ice cream and frozen dairy products from Totally Cool, Inc. due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. These products were distributed across the United States and include Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery ice cream cakes, Jeni’s frozen dessert sandwiches, and Marco ice cream sandwiches and pints. They may have been available at supermarkets such as Safeway and Whole Foods in Hawaiʻi.

New labeling rules for Hawaii-branded coffee products take effect July 1
New labeling requirements for Hawai‘i-branded coffee products will go into effect on July 1, 2024. These regulations apply to all coffee product inventory sold to the public or displayed at retail stores in Hawai‘i. The Hawaiian Coffee Labeling Act 211, enacted in July 2023, mandates that all coffee products with a Hawai‘i geographical reference disclose the location where the coffee was grown and indicate the percentage by weight of locally grown coffee and coffee grown elsewhere.

Travel-related dengue case confirmed on O‘ahu by Hawai‘i Department of Health
The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed one travel-related dengue virus case on Oʻahu. The individual traveled to a region where dengue is known to be spread. Symptoms of dengue can range from mild to severe and include fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, and body aches. Symptoms typically last two to seven days and although severe and even life-threatening illness can occur, most people recover after about a week.

New DOH portal compiles Maui environmental monitoring data
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) has introduced an Environmental Monitoring Data Portal to consolidate and share results from environmental monitoring in areas impacted by the August 2023 Lahaina and Kula wildfires. This platform offers public access to data collected by DOH alongside federal, state, and community partners. The portal includes narrative and graphical information to aid in data interpretation and usage, with downloadable reports available.

Oʻahu man convicted of commercial sexual exploitation of minor
A First Circuit Court jury has convicted Jefferson Manuales Ibalio, 35, of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. The conviction stems from Operation Keiki Shield, led by the Hawaiʻi Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Ibalio was apprehended on January 20, 2023, for soliciting sex from an undercover officer posing online as a 16-year-old girl. According to the Felony Information, Ibalio offered $200 in exchange for sex.

Hawai'i welcomes new class of adult corrections officers
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) welcomed a new class of adult corrections officers (ACO) today, June 21, 2024, at a graduation ceremony held at the Mission Memorial Auditorium in Honolulu. Eighteen graduates from Basic Corrections Recruit Class (BCRC) 24-03 completed their training and will commence their careers as corrections officers in facilities across Hawaiʻi.

Maui announces closure of disaster recovery centers; new location opening soon
The County of Maui, in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of Hawaiʻi, has announced the official closure of the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) and the Community Recovery Center (CRC), effective Saturday, June 29, 2024. In their place, the County of Maui Office of Recovery will host a blessing and soft opening on July 3, 2024 at its new location at Lahaina Gateway.

Kaua'i District Health Office releases findings from 2024 CASPER survey
The Department of Health (DOH) Kauaʻi District Health Office (KDHO) has released its report of the 2024 Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) survey. KDHO conducted door-to-door surveys from June 3-7, 2024, at randomly selected households islandwide. Over the course of five days, survey teams completed a total of 177 interviews, collecting valuable data about Kauaʻi residents’ health and well-being, their preparedness for emergencies, and their concerns about climate change impacts.
